"FREE THE ARTISTS"
an artistic approach to creativity for children with autism
Walter Heath November 2004
This program is all about freedom.
Children with autism obviously need a structured environment in the classroom, but with our structuring, we seem to have removed most, if not all of personal freedom.
We have reserved time for ‘crafts’, but we even structure their craft ‘projects’ to meet ‘goals’. These ‘projects’ are most often pre-determined use of pre-determined forms and actions to arrive at a pre-determined solution to arrive at a pre-determined conclusion.
Then we attempt to measure the results. All this has merit, but, by nature, the process does not allow much personal freedom.
This program attempts to create an environment that, with little or no boundaries, allows the child to react freely with the materials and tools provided. I believe it is very important offer very little guidance or direction, and defiantly NO instruction or judgment.
It is equally important to give MASSIVE amounts of encouragement!
As an artist, I feel that the act of creating instills some of the artist’s energy into the art created. As the facilitator of these works of art, I try to stay as far away as I can from the student/artist's transfer of creative energy.
I do respect these young people as true artists. I feel that this respect is one of the most important factors that have allowed this project to be so successful.
