“Taking the Show Down/ No Boundaries!”

A Lesson in Humanity

by Bahereh

Nov. 2004

Pen Argyl, PA

As a full-time artist I do many shows, indoor and outdoor. Doing these shows is necessary for spreading the Energy of my work as well as bringing another form of energy called money in order to sustain what I love to do, to create objects of beauty.

Every show has to go up and then has to come down, whether the show is to be held in an indoor space, or in an outdoor open space. The art show I did last weekend was no exception. All the artists were present the night before the starting of the show, in a large space, ready to create the individual spaces, the artificial boundaries! They transformed the space into small cubicles like open row houses. Fascinating! We all had our booths set up, with our merchandise displayed, ready to do business. The next day the show started, and the artists were ready. Just like NATURE, if the ARTISTS are not appreciated, they will not prosper! Creatively, they will die, because they may not be able to sustain being CREATIVE. There is nothing better than the Soul of an artist touching the HEART of a customer.

So, every time a customer left, I said, thank you for blessing my life by choosing my art.

Art is about communication, and I am glad that we have communicated so well.

Then came the time to take the show down. We all got to work, and started to pack up our unsold stuff and to take down our individual tents. I said to my daughter, Sienna Mae, who was helping me, look at this space, it is turning back to an open large space. Then I said, if only we as the citizens of the world could take down these artificial manmade boundaries called borders! If only we as the citizens of the planet Earth can recognize that in reality there is only one country, the Planet Earth, and One Race, the Human Race!

In reality, what keeps us apart in this world is nothing more than these temporary boundaries that I’ve observed being taken down in many of these shows. Look at it as a miniature version of our Planet Earth with all its Human-made superficial boundaries. Once we all recognize that in reality there is only one country, the World, and once we all recognize in our hearts and souls that there is only One Race, namely Human Race, we can all be more peaceful and more respectful of each other, more Human if you wish.

“Human Sufferings and War!”

by Bahereh

Nov. 2004 Pen Argyl, PA

The War is raging over Iraq, and I sit here and tell myself that I wish there was a better way, a much better way to bring Peace, Democracy and Freedom in any place in this world. And I tell myself there’s got to be a better way; there’s got to be!

My American friend is in pain, she has beautiful olive skin, and she has a beautiful energy, she is full of emotions. Her eyes tell many stories, although we communicate by words. Her husband is called up to go to Iraq. I rush to her to comfort her. A few days later while watching the news, I see the face of an Iraqi woman, this woman’s face and her suffering is not much different from my American friend’s. She too has beautiful olive skin with eyes that tell many stories and warmth that can be felt even on the TV screen. This young woman is laying down on a hospital bed in Iraq, she is injured in a war that she has nothing to do with except that she along with her family were in a car trying to get out of Fallujah. It’s a war, the American soldiers were shooting, and she is injured physically, but her pain seems much deeper than a physical pain, she has lost her mother who was shot next to her. The American soldiers were the ones who took her to the mosque close by to help her with her injuries. Her tears were rolling down her face while telling the story. She speaks in Arabic which is a language that I don’t speak, but I hear the translation of what she says in English, but I don’t need the translation, her pain already is conveyed and expressed to me without a translator.  I feel the urge to reach out and wipe her tears and to console her. After all, I know how hard it is to loose a beautiful mother under a normal circumstance, but the way she ended up loosing her mother is beyond what I wish to imagine.  All she had asked the soldiers was that please let me know what had become of my mother, then she had asked even if she is dead, please give me her body in order for me to bury her in my home town of Fallujah.  She still wants to go back to Fallujah, to search for her other relatives such as her grandparents. A man, perhaps her husband is sitting next to her hospital bed, he looks like he is frozen in time, looking in a distant, distraught, and completely silent. And I am crying for what I see, for the Americans and Iraqis alike.  I wish if I had a way to reach out through my TV screen, wipe her tears, to give her a hug, and to console him, but I can’t. So, I turn the TV off and sit in the sanctuary of my living room, lighting a candle and saying a prayer. The night falls, and I go to bed, the next morning I recall the last part of my dream. The Iraqi woman standing at my doorstep in a red sweater, my husband and another man are by our side, I look in the woman’s eyes, and I give her a hug, and she turns around and gives me the second hug. And I feel that somehow we have communicated. Her warmth and energy is very much like the warmth of my American friend who I have visited just a few days earlier. I see no difference. I see and I feel the commonality of people, and I see and I feel in my heart and in my soul that in reality there is only one country, the Planet Earth, and One Race, the Human Race!

“An individual perspective on the Culture of Our School System”

by Bahereh

Oct. 2004

Pen Argyl, PA

I have thought of writing this article for quite some time, but I have been hesitant to put these words on paper. I have been hesitant that my point might not be received well or/ and it might be misunderstood.  Yet I feel it is important to give my opinion on this matter a try.

So here it is:

I have lived in a small town of Pen Argyl for over 12 years. I must admit that having a child in the school has given me the opportunity to become acquainted with many good teachers in this area, but this is not the point.

The point is that:

You never know how much you can benefit from DIVERSITY unless you allow it to happen, unless you allow yourself to be exposed to it, and benefit from it.

When you visit the Pen Argyl School’s website, you cannot help but notice that nearly half or more of the faculty are local, and many are Pen Argyl School graduates. Although personally I have nothing against any of these individuals, this reveals something about the system. Every RIVER needs FRESH WATER in order to FLOW/ Every Community needs NEW BLOOD in order to Survive, and more importantly in order to Prosper & to Thrive, otherwise it can become stagnant.

I have no problem with the individuals who are obviously qualified to teach or to work in our school system, but I do see a problem when I see a school system that lacks diversity, a school system that hires mainly its own graduates. This localization, in the long run, will create too many similarities, and even when it might be fine on the individual bases, collectively it cannot be healthy, and runs the risk and danger of stagnation.

So, here is what I think:

I think it is important for the system to open up its wings and allow itself to soar. In order for a bird to soar, the wings need wind. THE WIND is like the NEW PEOPLE from far and beyond. The people who, like a SLY WIND, bring with them NEW ENERGY, a FRESH ENERGY!

Perhaps in an area like our Pen Argyl Schools, we need a good number of Slate Belt Graduates to act as the BEDROCK of our Pen Argyl School RIVER, but if we don’t bring NEW BLOOD into its BODY, we run the risk of a cultural draught in the years to come.

Yes, there is a COMFORT in a KNOWN ENVIRONMENT, but when there is NO or VERY LITTLE CHANGE, the COMMUNITY is not in a position to help itself GROW to its highest potential.

That’s all I felt was important to say for now! That’s all!

Sincerely, and with best intentions,

Bahereh the thinker & a concerned citizen!

True, True, I might be a late-bloomer,

But did you see my soil?!

Did you see my roots?

Did you see my seeds?

Did you see my seedlings?

Did you see my buds?

Did you see my half open flowers?

Did you see my buds trying to bloom, yet far from blooming,

Perhaps afraid of the inevitable withering which follows every bloom.

Did you see ME?!

I am here, standing tall like a bamboo, bending and not breaking, Free as a bird!

Did you know that I have bloomed many times before?

That is me!

‘Sienna Mae’s Apple Tree! The end of a saga”

Unfortunately the Apple Tree did not survive and did not thrive in our yard. We knew for quite some time that the Apple Tree was dead, but we left it standing in the yard. Finally on Sunday May 16th, 2004, we pulled it out of the ground, and we planted a Lilac tree in place of it. The dead Apple Tree is cut into pieces and it will be burned inside our chimneya located in our yard. We will have a small ceremony to bring this Saga into a closure.

THE END!

“Tradition, Tradition! The Wedding Tradition!”

 By Bahereh

May 16h, 2004

Who should walk a girl down the aisle?! The one who has raised her and truly has taken care of her. A mother, a father, a grandmother, a grandfather, or who or what have you!

So, why is it that we are still so hooked in this tradition that we need a father or a male figure to walk our girls down the aisle?! A tradition that perhaps was too narrow to begin with. That’s what I told my husband’s ex-wife when my step-daughter was walked down the aisle by her father (my husband) and her step-father; I told her that, honestly, you should be the one walking her down the aisle, because you are the one who has raised her, and has done the most for her!

Maybe it is about time, or even past time, to re-think many things. Maybe it is about time that both parents walk the girl down the aisle, or either parent do the walk! Or at times, the girl can do her walk solo. That should be okay too! She can give herself away, can’t she?! I just realized that I have problem with the term GIVING ONE AWAY too!!! Why should any one give himself/ herself away in a union?

By the way, who gives the boy away? Himself.  Right?

Why do we have double standards in a modern world? Don’t we believe in the equality of women and men? I do.

That’s all from me, now is your turn!

“To Convert or Not to Convert, that is the Question!”

By Bahereh

May 15h, 2004

I am quite aware of the importance of true Democracy and individual freedom. So why do so many social conformities and legal conformities exist?! It puzzles me when many individuals, especially women, who live in the Land of Freedom, when asked what political party they are, they often answer in the plural form “WE”.  “WE”, meaning that woman and her husband are members of such and such political party. I have even heard a woman saying that she became a republican by marriage! Another one said that she became a member of a particular religion by marriage! Many times when a person, man or a woman marries a Catholic (or Muslim), she or he converts to Catholicism (or Islam), which is okay I think, but what troubles me is the fact that this is a required conversion, not a choice. I still do not understand why individuals should not feel free to stay with whatever their heart wishes to stay with, even when entering into a marriage. The bond between two people should be based on a heart, mind, and soul connection, not on their religious conformity. Perhaps their diversity can be looked upon as a plus, not a conflict.

Of course, there are many exceptions to these rules! Not every couple, family, or group thinks that they have to be the same in order to be united. Not every one thinks that togetherness means sameness or conformity.

Perhaps we need to change the rules to fit individuals, rather than changing the people to fit social, religious, and political norms.

That’s all from me, now is your turn!

“The Veil?! Freedom from INVISIBLE Veils!”

By Bahereh
April 17th, 2004

Have you, Man or Woman, ever had to or chose to wear a Veil or perhaps multi-layered Veils?!
Have I ever had to or chose to wear a Veil or perhaps multi-layered Veils?!
That's the question? And that, my friend, is the big picture!

I was born and raised in Iran, Persia. I was born and raised in Iran under a different regime called Pahlavi Dynasty. And I was born in a Baha'i family with a belief in Equality of Women and Men, and the belief in the Oneness of All Religions, the Unity of All People, and World Peace. I admit that not everything was perfect under the Shah in Iran, but nevertheless, I liked the fact that most every one, girls and boys, had the opportunity to become as educated as they desired, and I liked the fact that I was free to dress up in the way I wished to dress up, I chose not wearing a veil. So, all my life I did not wear a veil.

Today at the age of 57, and after nearly 25 years of living in this country of USA, I am sitting here and thinking to myself that
JUST BECAUSE I DID NOT VEIL MY PHYSICAL BODY IN MY LONG LIFE, DOES THAT REALLY MEAN THAT I DID NOT VEIL MYSELF? THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS QUITE COMPLEX, I THINK.

And I would like to extend this question to every one of you out there; just to ponder upon this notion that: If wearing a veil represents covering, then have you ever covered your true self from the world? Have you ever felt that the world around you does not allow you to express your inner thoughts and your inner feelings freely? And little by little, with the passing of time, you have become multi-layered, a person covered with many layers of veils. My question to you is: WHERE ARE "YOU"?! AND for that matter: WHERE AM "I"?! And if you( out of fear, perhaps fear of being ostracized or worse, for the sake of respect, at times false respect or otherwise) had felt that it is for the best to let go of sharing and expressing your views on any particular subject, does that mean that you had to wear a veil? To cover?

How often we tell our children that, for the sake of respect, even if an adult is not right, just to stay quiet, to be a polite girl or a polite boy, just follow and keep your mouth closed! How often we adults, ourselves, stay quiet when we should stand up for truth. How often we don't exercise our virtue of courageousness for the false pretence, not rocking the boat?! I yearn for a day when we don't have to tell our children to keep quiet, even when they are right. I am afraid we might interfere with their virtue of righteousness and courageousness. We must teach our children, and ourselves, the value of the Virtue of Courage and to help them to become Critical Thinkers, and to live it openly.

Regardless of all that, I continue believing in the preservation of individuality, and freedom to investigate the truth for one's self.

Regardless, I think the best way to live our lives is to be able to live it as TRANSPARENTLY as possible, like a free bird that's soaring in the clear blue sky, and the mystics can see its inner and its outer beauty in its entirety.

Have I ever had to Veil myself? Yes and No!
Have you ever had to Veil yourself? Perhaps your honest answer is not much different from mine.
Let's not forget we tend to misjudge an individual who wears a physical veil. We must however remind ourselves that the brain and the heart is inside of the body, and a veiled person can be just as or even more open-minded and free- spirited as anyone else.

And have we ever chose to wear Veil's'?

I simply wish to unveil myself: To breathe freely, the gift that no one can give to me except me.
And I hope you join me in this life pursuit.

Bahereh, April 17, 2004 Copyright
Pen Argyl, PA

P.S.

As a Person of literature and poetry, I have always been fascinated with words and their paradox, the poetical devices that is more commonly used among some people such as my late beloved mother who used this mystic language on a daily basis. My recent article "The Veil" is simply a testimony to this claim. It is not about any particular situation, it is mainly about helping one to see deeper within themselves. Of course the veil can have many meanings, different meanings for every individual. For instance, I know that as much as I would like to unveil myself, but I am an ONION at heart and spirit, an onion with many gentle sweet, and at times, not so gentle sweet layers! But I do love the delicate layers of veils of mysteries, no doubt!

"Spring season, and my love affair with the Hyacinths and the Tulips

in my garden in Pen Argyl, Pa."

By Bahereh
Spring 2004

The aroma, the heavenly smell, and the beauty of the hyacinths, and the gorgeous tulips in my garden takes me all the way back to my childhood, to my parents' home. Just like the Lentil & Wheat sprouts, they also remind me of all the wonderful Iranian (Persian) New Year's I spent in my country, Iran.

It brings all the fine memories back to me. I smell the fresh air I have breathed there for so many years.

Our garden in Pen Argyl is full of hyacinths and tulips. When we moved here, the yard did not have even one hyacinth or tulip, now after 11 years of living here, and year after year planting the hyacinth and tulip bulbs from the Norooz table, now finally we have a full garden blooming.

I love nature, I love the Spring season when everything comes to life, but I especially love the Tubers. It is like having a love affair with nature, there is something magical about Tubers since they are hidden underground for many months, and one almost forgets where they were planted, and then suddenly they come to life. They come to life from apparent non-existence, and that adds an element of surprise to them. Non-existence?! Of course they exist, but not seeing them for months, and then suddenly they show up, this is where their sense of mystery lies for me!

Dear Whoopi-

Hello!

Here is me, Bahereh the Bee!J I explain! I understand that you don't know me, YET, but we have a lot in common. I am a big fan of the show, and I practically have all the Whoopi episodes on videotapes! Rumor has it that Omid Djalili will be coming to our area 'Bethlehem, PA' later this year, so maybe when he gets here, we should have a Whoopi Marathon!J And you and I have something in common: My ongoing joke is BaheRae says Hello to Mavis Rae!J As a matter of fact, Menopausal BaheRae says Hello to Menopausal Mavis Rae! And of course I guess You and I, Whoopi and Bahereh, have something else in common and that is that our names "WHOOPI & BAHEREH " are not in the computer!:-)

Omid is my nephew's name who is living in Ga., and Nasim/ Nassim or Nasseem is my niece's name who lives in AZ. So, Hello to Omid Djalili until we meet in the near future!

Your show is great! It is very funny yet it is very deep, and I along with my husband, Walter, and our 14 year old daughter, Sienna Mae Heath love to watch the show and we seldom miss an episode of your show.

"To Sienna Mae on the Subject of Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme"

My dearest Sienna Mae, these few lines are for you from your Mummy Bahereh who loves you very very much. Lately you have joined the school Chamber choir/ Ensemble, and you are singing the beautiful oldies song of Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme/ Scarborough Fair/Canticle (3:11) by P. Simon/A. Garfunkel, 1966. How wonderful that these beautiful oldies songs are living in the lives of your generation. We, the people of your parents generation have listened and enjoyed them for many years and we'll get double enjoyment when we hear our children's exposures to them. As you know, a couple of nights ago, our new friends, Pana and Scott joined us for dinner before going to your PYO/ PJSO Concert in ESU. What did we have for dinner?! Your mummy's delicious homemade Chicken Barely Soup with Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme! And I said that when the weather is good and my herb garden is in season, every time I go to the garden to pick herbs, I sing to myself Parsley, sage, rosemary and when I get to Thyme I realize that my garden is out of THYME! To my request you sang this line from the song by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle at the table while I served the SOUP with the Homemade Braided Bread! Then the magic started when Scott asked you for the Sheet Music to the song. You brought your music and then three of you, Pana, Scott, and my dear Sienna Mae sang this beautiful song at the table. So thanks to all three of you for singing at the kitchen table. I felt that your singing along with Pana and Scott's singing Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme, indeed blessed not only my Chicken Barley Soup, it also blessed our home! My thanks and my sincere gratitude to you all! And thank you my dear Walter for taking a picture of these three singers, the TRIO! The FOOFY FOOFY FYES!!!
My dear precious daughter, Sienna Mae Heath, I would like for you to know that whenever the times comes, when you may make a Chicken Barely Soup with Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme, and whenever you might Sing by yourself or along with your family and friends, the beautiful song of Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme/ Scarborough Fair/Canticle (3:11) by P. Simon/A. Garfunkel, 1966, if your tears roll down your delicate cheeks, just remember that my spirit will be there to wipe out your tears.
I love you more than you can imagine!

Mummy Bahereh

P.S.- If you remember, that was the night we gave you the CD of Simon & Garfunkel with the old songs they sang early in their career together.

P.S. Below is something silly I wrote about me, a few days ago. I thought it might amuse you!

Much Love, me,  Bahereh the B., the Bee! J

Note: When you see a '?', it should be pronounced as: Question mark!

“ I Must be a Late-Bloomer”

I haven’t bloomed as a child,

I haven’t bloomed as a teenager,

I haven’t bloomed as a young adult,

I haven’t bloomed as an adult,

I haven’t bloomed in my 30’s, nor in my 40’s,  nor at age of 57!

I create, I think creatively & freely, I write freely & creatively, I create, I create & I write,

And I sit and reflect, and I sit and I ponder,

I haven’t bloomed, yet all I know is that by every breath I take, I become more set in my open-mindedness,

Yes, the older I get, the more set I become in my open-mindedness, if that makes any sense!

And that, the more I reveal myself, the fewer friends stay around, GO FIGURE!

The more I explain myself, the more confused they become!

Perhaps I am a ‘?’, in the Persian way, ‘reverse the question mark’!, English way’?’, Small ‘?’, Large

’?’

Does not matter, because no matter what, I stay as a ‘?’

I have always been me,

By the passing of time,

I have become simply more of me,

But, I am still the same old me.

I haven’t bloomed YET, YET I am Free!

I don’t wish to breathe the polluted air,

I am only interested in breathing a different kind of air, a pure air,

An air that helps one to see clearly, and to being seen clearly,

To breathe freely, the gift that no one can give to me except me.

The air that beckons not necessary agreements or approval, but tolerance and respect. And free from

 judgment.

Do you think I am a loser?

No!  I must be a late-bloomer!

I must wait & see!

Perhaps I am a ‘?’, in the Persian way, ‘reverse the question mark’!, English way’?’, Small ‘?’, Large

’?’

Does not matter, because no matter what, I stay as a ‘?’

I am a Question Mark?

Persian Way?

English Way?

Why?!

Because a “?”,

Teaches us that we need to know that there is always a whole lot more to know.

Because a “?”,

Is a symbol that is Thought-Provoking/ or Provokes thoughts!

I am a Question Mark?

Persian Way?

English Way?

Why?!

Because I need to learn my life lessons Right and Left,

Just like a garden that produces beautiful flowers left and right!

And that my friend is the meaning of blossoming in life.

Glad to be a Question Mark!

Proud to be a Question Mark!

The end!

Or just the beginning!
